It was launched on September 28, 2009, as BET on Jazz, a spin-off channel of BET (Black Entertainment Television) that focused mainly on jazz and other music genres such as R&B, soul, funk, and blues.

In 2014, BET on Jazz was rebranded as Centric, a 24-hour lifestyle and entertainment channel that caters to African American viewers. Centric features programming that includes music, original series, documentaries, reality shows, and movies.
